Inside secrets of how the BB-8 Sphero toy works

Fortune.com reports that repair chain uBreakiFix has produced a teardown video of Sphero’s BB-8 toy (see below). Yep, ever since the launch of the new Sphero BB-8 toy last week, people have been wondering what makes this Sphero toy tick.

It’s very interesting that there is a gyroscope with two wheels is used to help balance the toy upright—along with a counterweight on the bottom the helps keep both the wheels in contact with the shell. This gives the toy traction (and is similar to other Sphero toys). What keeps BB-8’s head from falling off? A strong magnet that’s attached to a stem that extends upward from the base of the gyroscope.
