Rumor: The Anthology of Han Solo

Yesterday Hollywoodreporter.com reported news of another Star Wars Anthology. This will feature the origins of Han Solo, from a smuggler in A New Hope and then a Rebel General in The Return of the Jedi:

Chewbacca and Han Solo

Hollywood Reporter’s story:

When Christopher Miller was an intern at Lucasfilm, he was asked (and geekily accepted) to step into a Stormtrooper costume for one of George Lucas’ Special Edition Star Wars movies.

Now, in a paraphrasing of Darth Vader’s immortal words, a circle is about to be complete.

Miller and his partner Phil Lord, the duo behind The Lego Movie and the hit Jump Street films, are tackling one of the Star Wars anthology projects as their next directing vehicle, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The filmmaker team, who write, direct and produce, are stepping up to helm a movie that will focus on a young Han Solo, according to sources.

Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan are writing the script with the project, now set for a May 25, 2018, release.

The new film is not the same as the one that was to have been directed by Josh Trank. Trank parted ways with the project in May amid a cloud of issues stemming from his Fantastic Four shoot. That film, rumored to be an origin story of the intergalactic bounty hunter Boba Fett, is still searching for a director.

Disney and Lucasfilm had no comment.

Unclear is how their commitment to the Han Solo origin story will impact Lord and Miller’s schedule. The duo became a hot property following their witty take on the buddy cop genre with 21 Jump Street, and hotter still with 2014’s Lego Movie, which included a spectrum of geek icons from Batman to Star Wars.

They were to develop a Flash feature for Warners as a directing vehicle, but now that is likely off the table. As is a third Jump Street movie. However, they could stay on as writers or producers on those projects.

They were also developing an animated Spider-Man project for Sony, writing a treatment and producing, but since they were not intending to direct it, that could be less impacted.

The pair also would remain involved in the Lego franchise they helped launch.

Since the anthology will be about Han’s origins I wonder if some of his origins will include how he met Chewie … and how he become a smuggler, thief, and scoundrel when he worked for Jabba the Hutt?

The Han Solo anthology is scheduled to hit theaters on May 25th, 2018, so it will be a long time before we get any answers!

StarWars7News.com posted costume sketches for Han, Poe, and Finn that have appeared in a French edition of the Vanity Fair magazine.

Here is a picture of these sketches:

The fined print at the bottom of this photo indicates that the images of these costumes were provided by Lucasfilm, and have been drawn by the LFL concept artist Glynn Dillon.

This photo came from Planete-starwars.com. According to StarWars7News, . . . “The picture features a trio of costume sketches from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. One of them we’ve seen before – the sketch of Finn with the lightsaber clipped to his jacket. The other two show the gear that Poe Dameron and Han Solo will be wearing in the upcoming Star Wars sequel.”

Here is the English translation of the photo:

Actor Ken Leung stars in the Force Awakens

Actor Ken Leung stars in the Force Awakens

Great news! Both Makingstarwars.net and Starwars7news.com, have just posted something brand new today! This exclusive post shows that actor Ken Leung (who played Kid Omega from X-Men III: Last Stand) will appear in the Force Awakens.

Here is a picture of him as Kid Omega from X-Men:

Ken Leung as Kid Omega

Leung has been known as a very experienced TV and movie actor because in addition to a regular role he did in later season of the series Lost (produced by Abrams), he has appeared in a recurring role on the Bad Robot which was produced Person of Interest. While outside of TV, Leung’s numerous roles include some smaller appearances during some shows like in Spike Lee’s Inside Man, Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon, and Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence for example.

Spoiler Alert! According to Starwars7news.com there is some definite proof of what kind of character Leung is portraying in the Force Awakens. Leung is playing a military officer of the Rebels, wearing a brown uniform with a reddish belt. The uniform will include a rank insignia that denotes Leung’s character as a General (the same rank as Ackbar). Here’s what the costume designer Michael Kaplan said about Rebel uniforms in general: “The Rebels [in TFA] are in khakis and olives and some oranges—warmer colors.” And Leung’s character is wearing these colors.

Here’s a picture of the high rank rebel insignia:

According to the StarWars7News site, “. . . the rank insignia definitely resembles the old one used in previous movies, but instead of dots they’re using lines.”

Great news! Makingstarwars.net and Starwars7news.com, have just posted a new international Force Awakens promo poster/banner from Russia!

Though this is a Russian poster, there are some clues about the movie. On the right side there is Captain Phasma and two stormtroopers. In the middle is Kylo Ren, the new dark Jedi. On the left, we see Finn, Rey, and Chewy. Missing is Han Solo for reasons unknown. Rey’s (the female character) look appears to be new which something we haven’t seen before.

Here is a link with some more promo art from the movie.

Force Awakens actor reveals secrecy around movie script

On EW.com, actor Greg Grunberg talks about the secrecy behind the movie script for the Force Awakens. Grunberg, who plays Gorwyn an X-Wing pilot leader, said just imagine that you get a call from a best friend (director J.J. Abrams) that you know saying “’It’s true, I’m doing Star Wars and you can stop begging me, yes, I want you to be in this movie.’ It was a absolute dream come true.”

He said that he had been such a fan of all the actors and everything about the Star Wars universe, although he mentioned that some people may not have loved that some of the Star Wars movies they cannot deny how compelling and awesome it was, and that he could’t believe he was now apart of this universe.

Grunberg then said that during the filming of the Force Awakens there were some moments when his friend J.J. would yell the word, “Cut”, go over to him and then say “Are you f–king kidding me? Did that just happen? Did I just pan from C-3PO to R2-D2 to Han Solo and then to you?”. He then said that during the seven weeks that he spend in London it was like heaven to him. Grunberg even mentioned that it was also crazy because he said “Usually I’m the first person that J.J. calls to bounce ideas off. This one is so top secret, and so on lockdown, that all I can do is ask him, ‘How’s it going?’ and he’s like, ‘Oh, I’m really happy.’ So I know if he’s happy it’s just gonna be incredible.”

Grunberg talked about the secrecy surrounding the Force Awakens. He wasn’t allowed to see the entire script. He said that the only ones who read the entire script where Harrison Ford (Han Solo) and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia). He says:

We got our script pages, only the scenes that we were in. Not even what was being shot that day! It was all on red paper so we couldn’t copy it or take a picture of it. And then we had to give the script pages back at the end of the day. And we didn’t get them the day before to take them home and learn them—Carrie Fisher and I were talking about it several times, like, “This is crazy! An actor does not get to prepare on this movie.”
