Star Wars Costume Spotlight: R2-D2
Hey Star Wars fans! I am still continuing with my series of Star Wars costumes today with one of everyone’s favorite (plus my favorite) Astromech droid R2-D2!
When I saw R2-D2 in the exhibit, I was so excited because he’s one of my all time favorite Star Wars character!
From seeing the rough draft sketches of him, I learned how R2-D2 first started out from a small domed droid on one wheel to the three legged gadget-carrying droid that he is today.
Here below are three images of these composite R2-D2 sketches. Notice in the first sketch he’s got arms.
In the second sketch that R2 has eyes, a speaker-looking mouth, a kind of antenna on his head, and a clear glass dome that would reveal the circuitry.
Notice here that the third sketch eliminates the arms, the mouth, and the antenna.
Here’s some close up photo of R2-D2 as he appeared in episode IV. Let’s look at some of the details about R2-D2 up close.
Notice in this photo are some of the parts of R2— his computer hacking arm, his claw arm, a replica of his camera eye, the strange vents on his chest, the smaller kind of arms, one of the blue arms on his chest, and the light/holographic projector.
Notice here that a bit of the paint on his camera eye is chipped off.
On this close-up, note R2’s chest has some small dirty spots on and looks like the blue paint on the rest of him is starting to come off.
